📖 ✨ Krista’s August Reading Wrap Up ✨ 📖

So another month has passed me by very quickly it seems, although I feel like I’ve accomplished quite a lot. I know I sure did get a whole lot of reading in this August and I’m excited to tell you all about it! I shifted between historical retellings to smut to mc romance so I was all over the place this month. I normally don’t read this much but I blame booktok! They made me do it! And I’m sticking to it! Haha And these are just the books I finished…not even all the ones I’m actually currently reading….YIKES! Ok so I may or may not have a problem but at least I have something to share with you! So let’s get this August Wrap Up started with my first book that I chose this month.

My Real Name Is Hanna written by Tara Lynn Masih and published in September of 2018 was a quick read at 167 pages but such a powerful true story it will stick with me throughout the ages.I’m so glad I came across this one spontaneously surfing goodreads late one night.

Inspired by real Holocaust events, this poignant debut novel is a powerful coming-of-age story that will resonate with fans of The Book Thief and Between Shades of Gray.~National Jewish Book Award Finalist ~The Julia Ward Howe Award ~ Florida Book Award, Gold ~ Foreword Book of the Year Award, Gold Hanna Slivka is on the cusp of fourteen when Hitler’s army crosses the border into Soviet-occupied Ukraine. Soon, the Gestapo closes in, determinedto make the shtetele she lives in “free of Jews.” Until theGerman occupation, Hanna spent her time exploring Kwasova with heryounger siblings, admiring the drawings of the handsome Leon Stadnick, and helping her neighbor dye decorative pysanky eggs. But now she, Leon, and their families are forced to flee and hide in the forest outside their shtetele–and then in the dark caves beneath the rolling meadows, rumored to harbor evil spirits. Underground, they battle sickness and starvation, while the hunt continues above. When Hanna’s father disappears, suddenly it’s up to Hanna to findhim–and to find a way to keep the rest of her family, and friends, alive.
Sparse, resonant, and lyrical, weaving in tales of Jewish and Ukrainian folklore, My Real Name Is Hanna celebrates the sustaining bonds of family, the beauty of a helping hand, and the tenacity of the human spirit.

This book was captivating and a one of a kind story that had me flipping the pages from start to finish holding my breath awaiting to see what would happen next. I gave this book a 5 star ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ rating as it was such a gripping and emotional read! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read historical memoirs and true stories about Auschwitz and the Holocaust.

Dangerous Truths (Dark Confessions Book 1) written by Kris Butler was published August 27 2021 and was a little longer coming in at 413 pages. This is a Harem that I didn’t know I needed in my life! I openly swooned over each of Loren’s 5 men,yes I said five ladies!!, and I couldn’t help but find myself getting attached to and rooting for each one of the guys as the story unravelled even though each man was so different.I didn’t expect for Loren to have her own traumas or that she would have a harem being as she’s very much in the public eye.Well Loren took those expectations and flipped them upside down, each one landing on their head with a roaring thump and I am so happy that she did! It gave me a look into what it could actually be like to be a psychologist and have a life at the same time instead of just defining people by their careers as I have obviously done most of my life! I loved it and am now looking at people walking by me wondering what kind of “secret lives” they could be living after the working hours lol. This could lead to some great stories!!

I was lucky enough to be on the ARC team for this awesome start to a series and am now sitting here waiting (im)patiently for Book number 2 Dangerous Lies coming December 2021! I gave Dangerous Truths a solid 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ as it was the Mafia RH Slowburn Romance I didn’t know I needed and a series I’ll be sure to devour each and every book in as soon it releases! Loren just leaves everyone wanting more, as does Kris Butler, and I think you will want more too! Here’s the Amazon blurb so you can see for yourself!

What if the reflection staring back at you had become a stranger?

Inside, I was dying—empty, dark, alone.

Keeping it all together was exhausting and the ‘perfect’ mask I wore was beginning to slip. Pretending to have it all together wasn’t working anymore as the lies I had to tell weighed heavier each day. I’d done everything right my whole life and I still ended up divorced, childless, and alone. All I had left was my job.

Maybe it was time to be a little bad?

Seductive choices pulled me over into darkness and I no longer had to pretend. The escape was addictive as recklessness marred my skin and desperate decisions led me into the arms of unknown danger. The hardest part was knowing whether they would save me, or destroy me. Because their destruction was beginning to taste like salvation and I didn’t know if I could walk away.
After all, the sweetest lie was the one you told yourself, especially when the truth was the most dangerous confession of all.

*Author’s note: This is a why choose novel, meaning the main female character doesn’t have to choose between love interests. This is a dark contemporary mafia romance, medium burn with a slow build harem. The characters are adults with most being 30 and above. This story deals with depression and other themes that may be triggering. Please read the forward at the beginning of the book for more details. This is an adult romance and intended for readers 18+ due to language and content. This series will contain MM though not in book 1.

Finley’s Adoration written by Elizabeth Knox & E M Moore was published on July 7 2021 and is a really quick read at 67 pages and I literally devoured it in one sitting! I couldn’t put this lesbian MC romance down and ate up Finley’s words! I fell in love with these two and found myself wanting more and more! These ladies are fierce and are absolutely fire together. They make the pages smolder and I crave more! Ainslee and Finley are the lesbian couple that we all aim to be! They have that wild, crazy, passionate touch her and you will die kind of vibes and I am so here for it! This was the first Lesbian MC story that I have found and have since gone back and added this whole series to my kindle! The Iron Vex MC is my newest obsession and I have a feeling it will be around for quite awhile! I love the writing style of these two and the ladies they write are sassy and sexy and boss ass bitches! What more could I want?

Here’s the Amazon blurb so you can feel the scorching heat from Ainslee and Finley for yourself:

Finley

I knew love would make me go to dangerous lengths, but now it’s taken me this far.

I’d do anything for her and that much has always been true. Even from the moment we met I knew there was something more between us. Now we’re here, have a son, and we’re living our lives.

Though, it doesn’t mean anything will be easy. We’re facing threats on multiple accounts, from her biker club to my business.

Nothing will take Ainslee from me, and I’ll go to great lengths to keep her safe. She’s my adoration and I’ll spill blood if I have to.

Games We Play by Author Dana Isaly was released on August 27 2021 and was a short 90 pages. I felt it was almost too short. It left me wanting more of Jake and Quinlan and their unique romance. This is the story of a journalist who is sent to interview an online gamer/influencer who is quite popular in his field and rich. He quickly convinces her to play his “game” and let him be her dom for one night so she can get the true experience. As she discovers that she likes Jake and this sub/dom world she starts to fall for him making it hard for them to let each other go the next day. This was a fast burn smut romance and it has some triggers so please read those before reading this book. I gave it 3 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ and am hoping for a part 2 and for it to have some more plot to the book. I loved the heat in this one but I feel it could have had more storyline to it. See for yourself by grabbing your copy below!

Here’s the blurb from Amazon:

Jack is a faceless gamer known as The Joker. He makes a living playing video games and using his gravelly voice to bring people’s sexual fantasies to life.

When the top gaming site on the West Coast sends someone out to interview him, Quinlan walks in with her auburn curls and thick curves, and they’re instantly drawn to each other.

Quinlan has no idea of the monster that lurks beneath the surface of his calm demeanor.
Jack is quicksand, pulling her down into the dark underbelly of his desires.
To get out unscathed, she’ll need to give into the hunger she has always tried to deny.

Peyton’s Picture penned by the fabulous DC Renee was released August 11th 2021 and it is 59 pages in length. Ive never read a stalker romance before and I really enjoyed this one! The blurb from Amazon is below so you can check it out too!

She wasn’t the focus, but my eyes were drawn to her.

She was the perfect image, the perfect subject, the perfect picture. But one wasn’t enough. So I took more. I took what she didn’t know she gave…herself.

And then that wasn’t enough. I wanted my fantasies to become a reality. I wanted her.

I went further, crossed more lines…I gave her what she didn’t know she needed. Desire.

And still it wasn’t enough. It wouldn’t be enough until I had her. She would be more than a perfect picture. She would be mine.

Doesn’t that sound fun?!? Peyton is mysterious and smoking hot. He’s the stalker you didn’t know you wanted. Inessa is kick ass and sexy and I could see myself sitting with her having coffee. The characters were appealing, the storyline was exciting, and Peyton and Inessa’s chemistry was off the charts sexy!

I’m glad I picked up the second book in the Happily Ever Stalker Series and can not wait to read book 3 which will be written by a different author. Book 1 in this series is called Loebs Fall written by Chashiree M. and was published August 9 2021 and I still have to finish it. I realized they were a series and had to go back for book #1 but these can each read as a stand-alone as well. I’m just a series whore so I have to have them all for my collection.

I Have Lived A Thousand Years written by Livia Bitton Jackson was released on November 1 2011 and was 231 pgs. It was a captivating story and had me up late flipping those pages! If you love reading about memoirs about the Holocaust than this is a MUST READ! This book taught me so much and I truly resonated with the characters. I couldn’t believe that these things actually happened in our world. I couldn’t begin to imagine how the people must have felt. This book brought it into perspective for me and I’m forever grateful to Livia Bitton-Jackson for this! The Amazon blurb is below so you can see what I mean! What is death all about? What is life all about?

So wonders thirteen-year-old Elli Friedmann as she fights for her life in a Nazi concentration camp. A remarkable memoir, I Have Lived a Thousand Years is a story of cruelty and suffering, but at the same time a story of hope, faith, perseverance, and love.

It wasn’t long ago that Elli led a normal life that included family, friends, school, and thoughts about boys. A life in which Elli could lie and daydream for hours that she was a beautiful and elegant celebrated poet.

But these adolescent daydreams quickly darken in March 1944, when the Nazis invade Hungary. First Elli can no longer attend school, have possessions, or talk to her neighbors. Then she and her family are forced to leave their house behind to move into a crowded ghetto, where privacy becomes a luxury of the past and food becomes a scarcity. Her strong will and faith allow Elli to manage and adjust, but what she doesn’t know is that this is only the beginning. The worst is yet to come…

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things written by Brynn Greenwood was released way back in October of 2017 and I’m not sure how I haven’t picked it up until now! It was captivating and I couldn’t put it down. Bryn Greenwood is now one of my favorite authors! However Read the Triggers before you read the book! This story was immersive and the characters, especially Wavy, were relatable. I find myself still sitting here wondering what they are up to and imagining what their future could possibly be. I loved this story and I’m glad I picked it up! I recommend it to my fellow smut readers, anyone who loves age gap, and mc enthusiasts! Here’s the blurb from Amazon and make sure to grab your copy of this 5 star ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ book that I’m raving over! Links below blurb or click on the pic of the book cover!

A beautiful and provocative love story between two unlikely people and the hard-won relationship that elevates them above the Midwestern meth lab backdrop of their lives.

As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It’s safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house, until one night her star gazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father’s thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold.

By the time Wavy is a teenager, her relationship with Kellen is the only tender thing in a brutal world of addicts and debauchery. When tragedy rips Wavy’s family apart, a well-meaning aunt steps in, and what is beautiful to Wavy looks ugly under the scrutiny of the outside world. A powerful novel you won’t soon forget, Bryn Greenwood’s All the Ugly and Wonderful Things challenges all we know and believe about love.

If You Find Me penned by a new to me author Emily Murdoch was released on March 26 2013 and it was 237 pgs. It was a gripping and emotional novel that completely engrossed me! I couldn’t believe the things that these two poor little girls lived through just to have their worlds shattered by finding out they were victims of kidnapping. They move in with their birth father after being discovered living in a rundown camper trailer in the woods with their meth head mother. The girls slowly find their place and start to grow closer to their father finally finding home and a security they never knew they never knew. It was an all around great story and will stick with me. I highly recommend this if you like thrillers, kidnapping, and tough main characters! I gave this 4 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Here’s the blurb from Amazon and you can purchase your own copy by clicking on the book pic or link below.

In If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch, a broken-down camper hidden deep in a national forest is the only home fifteen year-old Carey can remember. The trees keep guard over her threadbare existence; the one bright spot is Carey’s younger sister, Jenessa, who depends on Carey for her very survival. All they have is each other, as their mentally ill mother comes and goes with greater frequency. Until that one fateful day their mother disappears for good, and two strangers arrive. Suddenly, the girls are taken from the woods and thrust into a bright and perplexing new world of high school, clothes and boys.

Now, Carey must face the truth of why her mother abducted her ten years ago, while haunted by a past that won’t let her go… a dark past that hides many a secret, including the reason Jenessa hasn’t spoken a word in over a year. Carey knows she must keep her sister close, and her secrets even closer, or risk watching her new life come crashing down.

Somebody’s Daughter written by Ashley c Ford was released June 1 2021 and is 216 pages. Unfortunately I couldn’t get into this book and it ended up in my DNF pile. I’m not sure if I just was moody or it was the writing style but I couldn’t make it past the first few chapters. I’m a mood reader though so this ones on me! Not Ashley C Ford in the least! I didn’t find anything wrong with the book or writing and will perhaps pick it up another time. So I don’t have a star rating for you guys for this book but I’ve heard great things and I know a lot of other people love it so I’d give it a try if your thinking about it! What I do have for you guys is the Amazon link and the purchase links below!

Through poverty, adolescence, and a fraught relationship with her mother, Ashley C. Ford wishes she could turn to her father for hope and encouragement. There are just a few problems: he’s in prison, and she doesn’t know what he did to end up there. She doesn’t know how to deal with the incessant worries that keep her up at night, or how to handle the changes in her body that draw unwanted attention from men. In her search for unconditional love, Ashley begins dating a boy her mother hates. When the relationship turns sour, he assaults her. Still reeling from the rape, which she keeps secret from her family, Ashley desperately searches for meaning in the chaos. Then, her grandmother reveals the truth about her father’s incarceration . . . and Ashley’s entire world is turned upside down.

Somebody’s Daughter steps into the world of growing up a poor Black girl in Indiana with a family fragmented by incarceration, exploring how isolating and complex such a childhood can be. As Ashley battles her body and her environment, she embarks on a powerful journey to find the threads between who she is and what she was born into, and the complicated familial love that often binds them.

The Color of Lies by C J Lyons was published on August 13 2019 and is 336 pages of fun! I really enjoyed Ellie’s story and learning about her condition allowing her to see people’s “true colors”. When a mysterious journalist rolls into town looking to talk to Ella about her past, secrets are revealed and her life is changed forever. Not to. mention that he is the only person she’s ever met that she couldn’t see his “colors”. This story kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing until the very last page! It is an incredible page turner and taught me so much about what we see versus reality and how emotions and family bonds can easily cloud our judgements! It also taught me about the condition Ellie has called synesthesia. What an incredible condition and it was truly interesting reading from someone with synesthesia’s perspective. I was completely submersed in Ellie and Alec’s story and would recommend this book to absolutely anyone who would listen! 5 huge stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ from me for this page turning fun book! The Amazon blurb and purchase links are below!

A gripping young adult suspense novel drenched in color, mystery, and lies. New York Times and USA Today bestselling author CJ Lyons grabs you and won’t let go, keeping you guessing until the very last page of The Color of Lies.

When you can see emotions in color, motives become black and white. Even murder.

Ella Cleary has always had an eye for the truth. She has synesthesia, which means she is able to read people via the waves of colors that surround them. Her unique gift has led her to trust very few people outside her family since her parents died in a fire. So when a handsome young journalist appears with no colors surrounding him at all, her senses go on high alert.

But while Alec is a mystery, Ella feels a connection to him she can’t ignore. Something about him feels familiar, and she is able to talk with him in ways she can’t with anyone else. Then just as feelings develop between them, Alec drops a bombshell: he believes her parents’ deaths were no accident. And she may be in more danger than she’s ever realized.

Soon Ella doesn’t know who she can trust or even who she really is. As family secrets begin to unravel and fact and fiction collide, it becomes clear that the only way for Ella to learn the truth about her past is to find a killer.

The Color of Lies:

A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum was released Feb 4 2020 and is 368 pages long. It is the emotional story of a Palestinian woman’s life and her growth to learn to use her own voice and take back what should be hers to begin with….her life! This book really makes you realize what it is like to be a Palestinian Muslim woman existing in today’s American society. I loved the way the story was told and recommend this to anyone who loves a coming of age story with a strong female main character! I felt every emotion that was put into this book and yearned for Deya to gain her freedom and happiness as well. An incredible read and I gave it 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️!! The Amazon blurb is below along with purchase links!

Garnering justified comparisons to Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns… Etaf Rum’s debut novel is a must-read about women mustering up the bravery to follow their inner voice.” —Refinery 29

“Where I come from, we’ve learned to silence ourselves. We’ve been taught that silence will save us. Where I come from, we keep these stories to ourselves. To tell them to the outside world is unheard ofdangerous, the ultimate shame.”

Palestine, 1990. Seventeen-year-old Isra prefers reading books to entertaining the suitors her father has chosen for her. Over the course of a week, the naïve and dreamy girl finds herself quickly betrothed and married, and is soon living in Brooklyn. There Isra struggles to adapt to the expectations of her oppressive mother-in-law Fareeda and strange new husband Adam, a pressure that intensifies as she begins to have children—four daughters instead of the sons Fareeda tells Isra she must bear.

Brooklyn, 2008. Eighteen-year-old Deya, Isra’s oldest daughter, must meet with potential husbands at her grandmother Fareeda’s insistence, though her only desire is to go to college. Deya can’t help but wonder if her options would have been different had her parents survived the car crash that killed them when Deya was only eight. But her grandmother is firm on the matter: the only way to secure a worthy future for Deya is through marriage to the right man.

But fate has a will of its own, and soon Deya will find herself on an unexpected path that leads her to shocking truths about her family—knowledge that will force her to question everything she thought she knew about her parents, the past, and her own future.

The Don was 327 glorious pages and The Lady(The Oath Duet) is 380 (even more!)pages and was just released September 2 2021. Guess what?!? I was lucky enough to grab a spot on the arc team for this amazing duet! Blood stains my hands, my soul, my heart, yet I’ll shed more to keep her safe.

She just doesn’t know it yet.
How could my Lady be anything other than a silken promise taunting me with every breath she takes?
A new Don reigns over Manhattan.
But though I won the war, peace isn’t easily brokered.
Over a decade of avenging my father’s death, I made many enemies.
To each and every one, Jen’s a target.
But I’ll paint NYC red before I let them harm her.
I just never imagined I’d be in the line of fire first…

A heart broken by grief can feel no guilt or shame with the brutality in which vengeance is delivered.

Top #75 in the entire Kindle Store

I’ve spent a lifetime avoiding the various factions of the mafia in NYC, yet somehow I’m in it up to my eyeballs.
I should be scared.
I should want to run.
Yet the city quivers in fear with every designer-clad footstep I take, because the Valentinis have ascended, and I’m the Don’s Lady.
It’s intoxicating.
However Luciu comes with vendettas and a craving for vengeance that could get him killed.
With my allegiance tied to the Irish, can I say yes when he wants me to take an oath to the Sicilians?
Is a happily-ever-after on the cards when the ‘after’ isn’t even promised?

This is the second part of ‘The Oath’ duet in The Valentini Family series.

The Reaper Incarnate (Reaped Book 1) by C A Renee and R E Bonds is 166 pgs and was published on May 24 2021. It’s a unique series and I’m loving it and have moved onto book 2 in this series Hunting The Reaper! This series wasn’t at all what I was expecting and it is gruesome yet super sexy and so much fun! I love the kick ass female main character and the men she slays. These guys really know how to keep you hooked and wanting more! The writing style is easy to follow and so is the storyline. I gave this book 4 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ and will be back with reviews for the series as I’m finishing! Here’s the blurb form Amazon so you don’t miss out on this fun read just make sure you read the triggers first. I’ve also included the purchase links below as well!

The Reaper is hot on your tail,
What have you done?
You’ve made it onto her list,
Who did you hurt?
The hunt is just the beginning,
How far can you run?
Your soul is hers to reap,
Where can you hide?
Watch out for her scythe,
Why do you cry?

The life of a vigilante is meant to be a lonely one,
Roaming darkened streets and collecting secrets.
Until the four of them forced their way into mine,
Stirring up feelings I didn’t know I had.
But if they try to fuck with my plans,
My pretty knife will be through their throats and my bloody scythe on their foreheads.

This Is War Baby is by K Webster and it is 166 pages of pure smutty greatness! This book was banned from Amazon for being to hit for kindles! So please don’t be a Karen and read the damn trigger warnings! I couldn’t get a blurb from Amazon obviously (banned books don’t get blurbs😂) so I posted the warning that K Webster so kindly placed in the front of the book below! I couldn’t get enough of this dark delight and absolutely love Baylee! Strength and courage doesn’t even begin to describe her! War is unique and I love the way his mind works! Gage has his own demons and although he is villainous I couldn’t help but love him! Leave it to me to live the bad guys ha! So if owning all the dark romance is your thing….(and I do mean dark!) then come dig into K Webster’s world and grab this trilogy that I gave an easy 5 stars⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I can’t wait to read books 2 and 3 to see what her dark twisted mind has for me! Her writing is flawless and her stories are incredible! She’s by far my favorite smut author and the first “banned” book I’ve ever owned! Amazon doesn’t sell the first book but you can purchase it over on K Webster’s site, I’ve included the link below, or you can click the link below which will take you to Apple Books to download. I believe I got this for free on iBooks but I don’t want to say I’m 100% positive about that! So without further ado here is the warning and the book cover with links.

Warning:
This is War, Baby is a dark romance. A really dark one. So dark you’re going to wish you had a flashlight to see yourself to the end and someone to hold your hand. Human trafficking, dubious consent, and strong sexual themes that could trigger emotional distress are found in this story. This story is NOT for everyone.
It WILL cross lines.
It WILL break the rules.
It WILL make you sick.
And it WILL stress you out.
But…
There is also light.
Once you get past the darkness, you’ll find something pure and whole.
Something lovely.
Something happy.
You’ll find love.
And it WILL be worth the journey.”

Recap:

I would also like to thank all of these wonderful authors for writing these incredible stories for me to rave about and share with all of you! These books are such a huge part of my life and I couldn’t imagine not having them in my life! They teach me, distract me from my problems, visualize their imaginations, make me laugh, cry and throw my kindle all in one tiny bundle of paper and ink held together with love, sweat and I’m sure many many tears!! That to me is incredible and I aspire to become a writer like some of these awesome woman, and a few men, that I have gotten to meet in the past couple of years! The book community is one I am so proud to be apart of…a place I can finally feel welcomed and supported!

So I think I’ve included every book I read last month and if I missed any I am so sorry! There were some truly amazing books this month and I was so busy with all the reading! I never actually get to read this much usually but I’ve discovered kindle and audiobook and that I can do both at once if I concentrate hard enough and don’t read two books in the same genre/trope lol 😂

As much as I’d love to I unfortunately Do Not make any money off of sharing these links! I simply do it for the love of reading and my own creative desires.
